Letter No. 44/160. Re John Jones who had allowed two prisoners William Ayton and Henry Ryan escape from the colonial hospital when he was on duty at the gate of the hospital. The two men subsequently violently assaulted the lockup keeper Thomas Harrison. As Jones gave testimony that convicted the two men and his life was considered in danger if he stayed at Newcastle the Magistrate requested as to how to dispose of him. For his personal safely Jones was being kept at the Newcastle gaol until it was decided how to deal with him
